Our 2012 President
“Serve with a purpose, surely you’ll find self-fulfillment and happiness.”
These are the words that came out from the mouth of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel’s 7th President: Anthony Valmoria Aguhar when he took on the challenge to become its 2012 leader. His members fondly call him Anton, and know him as someone who has the passion to serve and someone who possesses the quality of good leadership essential in leading this very successful local organization to new heights.
As a young professional, he too has inspirations, most of the time it is one’s family and the experiences that he has gathered throughout the years.
Anton was born on June 8, 1985 in the City of Cebu. He is the youngest son of a restaurateur and a government employee. At a young age, he engaged himself in selling candies, steamed banana and had the resourcefulness to offer his project making skills to his schoolmates and friends at a minimal fee as a means to help his parents in sending three of his siblings to a non-sectarian institution. At such a tender age, he has already seen more than his share of experiences in what is life and has already grabbed ownership for responsibilities not expected of children of his age.
It was not a surprise that with Anthony’s penchant to involve himself responsibly in the needs of his family that he would quickly be successful in his early childhood in Talibon, Bohol. From extracurricular activities in school, joining clubs, community and church activities, he allowed himself to develop and acquire good leadership skills that may one day shape his future. His aspirations to be an honor student were fueled not by fame but by his visions for his future. As a child, he yearned one day to become independent but unlike most who do so, yearned in such a way that whatever successes he may reach in doing so, these will always be dedicated to helping and assisting his family to live a better life. With great determination he always aimed to achieve and be the best that he could be in everything that he would be involved with. This did not go unnoticed, as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) chose him to be part of its scholarship program, which allowed Anton to earn a degree at the Cebu State College of Science and Technology, now known as the Cebu Technological University.
Involving himself in numerous university, civic and professional organizations helped Anton mold himself into who he is today. He breezed through the course of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology and in the process earned Magna Cum Laude honors and was recipient of several leadership and academic excellence awards including the DOST Academic Excellence Award and the Manny Villar Leadership Award.
He began his professional career with Airtouch Distributors Incorporated; a subsidiary company of Junrex Holdings, Inc. He was instrumental in helping the company design their corporate training enhancement programs for both the sales and technical teams. Because of his desire and unfulfilled dream to serve the people, he joined the government service. In such a way, he would be able to spring forth into action his passion to be of greater service to the community. This also allowed him to pursue his Masters Degree in Management. In doing so, he found himself of service once more as he became part of several student body organizations while pursuing his continuing education.
Little did he know that his foray into his Masters Degree pursuit would open his doors further to his pursuit to being of service to the community. School allowed him to touch base with former college friends, one of whom was Liezl Palicte, an already active member of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel. Little did Leizl know that by inviting Anton to one of the local organization’s Coffee Conversations, that she was already inviting one of its future Presidents.
Conducting the Coffee Conversations orientation was future 2010 Asia Pacific Most Outstanding President and JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel’s 2009 President, Emi Rose Parcon. So inspiring was her talk to Anton that this convinced him to become a member and eventually took oath as a full-pledged member in January 2009. Anton then made the promise to always be an active member, contribute as much as he can and share his time to fulfill the goals of the JCI movement.
He was appointed Assistant Commissioner for National Projects in 2010 which he did so while completing his studies and his thesis.
In 2011, he was appointed as the local organization Secretary, which almost all JCI members know, is a position otherwise known as the Little President. As Secretary, Anton was further thrust into his involvement with the local organization’s activities and was able to provide and learn valuable insights in running the organization. With his great enthusiasm and sincere commitment to help, he was able to assist his fellow professionals within the local organization to grow and develop and at same time found a means to encourage his fellow members to become beacons of positive change in order to be able to make a difference in everything that they did.
With his vision to strengthen the performance and stability of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel and as this year’s President, Anton found himself more than eager to provide developmental growth to both personal and professional careers to his fellow members, envision and implement projects that would respond to the needs of our community, sustain the local organization’s best practices and projects that have been known to be the trademark of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel and committed himself to the local organization’s membership growth.
More than he knows it, Anton seeks out to meet the challenges head on, ensure to sustain, uplift and provide more opportunities and empower young professionals in JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel to become agents of positive change.
MOVING FORWARD to be BETTER! We Mean. We Do. We Achieve.
