Visiting old friends
JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel spends time to enjoy the company and immerse themselves with the children of the SOS Children’s Village, Talamban, Cebu City.
SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE, BRGY. TALAMBAN, Cebu City (October 23, 2009) – Giving meaning to the JCI tenet “Service to humanity is the best work of life”, co-project chair Michael Orio, an aspiring new member of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel gave justice to the local organization’s visit to longtime partner and friend, the SOS Children’s Village.
Amidst throngs of children and parents who reside in the said compound, Mike, despite the absence of wife and co-project chair Zyle Orio who had to attend to pressing work matters, reveled in the environment of giving joy and entertainment to the kids who have been friends with JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel since it first started in the last quarter of 2005. In the four years of existence, the children of SOS still hold a very special place in the hearts of the JCI local organization, starting with the very successful radiothon dubbed “Big Brother, Big Sister Program” during the term of Charter President Cerwin Eviota, the very first big project JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel laid out in its infancy with which was also awarded merit as Best Community Development Program during the 58th JCI Philippines National Convention in Olongapo in 2006.
2007 President Angelo Daniel Parcon, who came also representing his wife 2009 President Emi Rose Parcon, who was also unable to grace the event due to work-related matters as well, also gave a message to the SOS children. Incidentally, the Parcons have had the very memorable experience of working with the children as early as 2005 when Emi and some friends put up the theater production “The Little Prince” with the SOS children as the main actors.
“SOS holds a very special part of who we are today and what we aim to achieve as a JCI local organization. We have long considered each other family ever since we were able to interact with these incredible and amazing children during the Little Prince production and we were all the more excited to work with them when we found out that they would be a recipient as well to programs that we, as JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel, would be launching in the course of those 4 years”.
The immersion program with the SOS Children’s Village is part of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel’s 4th year Anniversary Temiong Vergel De Dios Week Celebration. Over-all Temiong Week chairperson Karlo Angelo “Kimo” Cea also graced the activities during the night and enjoyed the company of the kids who were excellent hosts to the local organization members.
As the night unfolded, the children gave out various presentations; with all of the children, to those as young as 4 years old to the young adults actively participating; to the amazement of the members who were present. “Amazing, simply amazing” quipped Mike, “to see the stories of these kids and to see how talented and incredible they are. Words truly fail me”.
Not to be outdone, JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel also dished out a very memorable performance with Mike doing a guitar duet with fellow aspiring member Vianney Yap which elicited a rousing applause from the children and the parents.
In closing, SOS Children’s Village Danilo Latonio thanked the members of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel for their presence and their partnership throughout the years. PP Gelo in turn expressed the local organization’s gratitude for the very special night and for the friendship that SOS has accorded to JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel.
